the hunt for painting subjects

Glass is such a fascinating substance. Often transparent, yet surprisingly solid. It can be molded, blown, colored, and stretched into almost any shape you can imagine. Have you seen the work of the internationally known artist Chihuly? If you have ever been in the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, you walked under one of his incredible installations.

To create a painting of a clear glass object can be a challenge. Because glass often has no color itself, the only things that define its shape are the color of what is behind it and the patterns of light reflecting off it. I never tire of trying to present this in oil paint.
